No matter what happens, we should always have some goals in place. Long term, mid-range, and short term ones per se. This is the time of year that we should start getting together ideas for what those goals will be next year, in my humble opinion. It is close enough to be able to get realistic idea of the coming year (in theory, see this time of year 2019) and not so soon that you won’t be able to get a plan together in time.
Think about it. What would you like to have done by the end of 2021? What would make you feel like, I did that! I’ve had real growth! The number of resolutions are up to you. You can do big one, or 20 small ones that when combined, make a difference.
I am a goal setter, some take longer then others (this business took years and a retry) and others I have knocked out fast, or faster. It doesn’t matter, this helps keep what you want to do in your mind. The way I do it is, I do about 8-10 annual goals on the medium or higher level. I think about them around this time of the year, until the end of the year. What is on this level, is up to you. Is it big because you want to budget to upgrade furniture, read more, or learn a new language? Or is it big because you want to start a new job or career for more stability? It’s not about how much it is, it is about that extra effort required to get this done.
So, after I do my 8 or so annual goals by the end of the year, in January I think of smaller goals that I want to do by the end of the month or the season. In that case, the end of the season would be April. These goals could be things that are small steps toward completing the annual goals, that need to be done or something independent of them all together. I continue this throughout the year.
Will you get everything on your resolution list? It depends, but you must try. Then regardless you’ll be doing more. We can’t help the things that we cannot control, like the pandemic that struck this year. When these things happen you have to reassess and reprioritize. You may to put off a goal or find that it is not that important. This is fine, it is all part of getting where you really want to be and being adaptive.
I hope you all stay safe and healthy out there. Remember, no one is perfect but use this time to move forward if you can. You can do it.
